At Lakeside Dental, our office is equipped with CEREC technology. CEREC crowns utilize a special computerized 3D CAD/CAM (computer-assisted design/manufacturing) machine, which allows us to build and place your crown in just a single 2-hour appointment.
In contrast, traditional (lab-made) crowns require 2 appointments over a period of 2-3 weeks. CEREC allows us to offer faster results and helps you get the dental care you need on your schedule.
Crowns are most often used to restore teeth that have been broken or cracked by an oral injury, or to treat a cavity that is too deep to restore with a filling. A crown may also be recommended after a root canal, or if you have a large filling that is failing and needs to be replaced. More rarely, dental crowns are used for purely cosmetic purposes to improve the appearance of teeth that can’t be treated with cosmetic procedures like dental bonding or veneers.
The CEREC crown process is quick and easy, and it takes only a single, 1-2 hour appointment. To begin, Dr. Blalock will clean and numb your mouth. You can also be sedated if you feel it will make you more comfortable. Next, he will remove any enamel that has been damaged or affected by decay, then shape it into a strong platform to which your CEREC crown can be attached.
Dr. Blalock will use a handheld scanner to capture a 3D image of your mouth and upload it to our CEREC system. Using specialized software, he will design your crown based on this 3D image of your mouth. Next, he will place a block of tooth-colored porcelain in the CEREC machine, which will then cut and trim it into the proper shape based on Dr. Blalock’s design. Once your crown is complete, Dr. Blalock will make sure it fits properly, then bond it into place with dental cement.
No special care is required after a CEREC crown is placed. Simply make sure that you brush twice a day and floss once a day, and see Dr. Blalock for regular cleanings every six months. It’s that simple!
26% of all adults (ages 20-64) have untreated tooth decay. Crowns are the best way to treat extensive decay and save your tooth.
With a CEREC crown, you can get care for a damaged or broken tooth in just one day. You can get the treatment you need even with a busy schedule.
Because your permanent crown is made in a single appointment, there’s no need to wear a bulky, uncomfortable temporary crown.
Restoring a damaged tooth with a CEREC crown helps prevent complications like tooth infection and loss, and relieves your pain and discomfort.
